Yet Another Farewell

We are headed to Manila in order to send Mim back home to the States. Her time here has been spent well, and she has invested herself in the clinic. It was wonderful to see her adapt to the changes she faced here in the Philippines and to truly embrace the culture. She assisted with many of the births, pre-natals, and post-pardums, getting to know Tagalog by spending time with Cecile, Imelda, and Jen – the Filipino midwives – and interacting with the Filipino mothers. Her face would light up as she would describe helping out with the births and holding the tiny newborns. Oftentimes, there would be no births for days at a time, and then in one night three women would arrive one after another and all go into labor, resulting in three births in the period of 12 hours. It makes for an eventful night and many great memories. I know that Miriam has been storing up the stories to share with people back home. She gave of herself and was so kind to everyone, and they all love her here. She will be missed by many.

We are renovating a room in the back of the clinic for an intern volunteer, Jessica Saitz, and her daughter Mia. They will be staying in the room hopefully at the beginning of August, allowing Jessica to be on call at the clinic. At the moment, we are working on installing louvered windows, have begun to wire in a breaker with electricity, and are stuccoing the walls. The floor is in decent shape and we will paint it when we are finished. Our next big step is installing a drop ceiling and cut out a door connecting the room to the kitchen. That will be quite a fine, gritty, dusty mess. We will do our best to tape off all we can to minimize the dust. We have taken some pictures, which I will try to upload soon.

There are various other projects that we are working on as well, and we have gotten a green light from the DNR to begin constructing a cement/rock wall at the Mercyland Property, with hopeful promises that more will follow in regards to the permits. So we are praying hard and hoping that City Hall and the DNR will come to a consensus and allow us to being the groundwork.

It is late here and we have a busy day tomorrow. Sending out our love to all, Kels for both
