We are not the only volunteers here at Mercyland. There is a
brother sister pair hailing from Canada, Lacy and Lee, who attended
church with Theresa Eheler prior to her marriage to Jason. Jason and
Theresa live here on the property with their four daughters. Maiya,
their oldest, is eight years old and was born on December first in
Japan. She has lovely green eyes with dark lashes, and is fair-haired,
as are all of her sisters. She is very intelligent and perceptive,
filled with seemingly boundless energy, has a superb vocabulary, and is
too smart for her own good. Maiya reads people very well and can be
quite manipulative. She is slim in stature and elfish in her looks. We
have become good friends. She calls me gorgeous, and she calls John
Langham, her other good friend, goofball. My husband has been dubbed
John Jolly, ironically the same nickname the Langham nieces and nephews
back at home gave him.
Ayda is six, and her resemblance to Maiya is obvious. Ayda’s eyes are a deeper blend of grey and green, matching her more laid back approach to life. She is unharried. Ayda is more emotional and dreamy than Maiya, with a sensitive nature. Whereas Maiya is slender and willowy, Ayda is more filled out. She loves to laugh and seeks approval. Loyal and a little on the clingy side, she is very affectionate and generous.
Hannah is the only blue-eyed girl and her eyes are clear blue with light lashes. She whines to make herself heard and to compete for attention. Hannah is four, and follows her older sisters around. Her character is still being shaped, and she may turn into quite the drama queen. She is cautious in her play, and she is more gentle than her older sisters.
Nasira is the 18 month old baby of the family, and is very bright. Like the two older girls, Nasira has her daddy’s thick dark lashes. She stares intently and picks up on things rather quickly. She has a knack for getting into everything that she shouldn’t, and comprehends a great deal. She has just begun to bite people…
Jason and Theresa have been very welcoming to us, and have shown us the ropes. They took us shopping at the old market and pointed out their favorite vegetable venders, fruit stands, and grocery stores. Jason has a heart for Christ, with a sincere and humble heart. He speaks Tagalog pretty decently, and even if his conjugation is a bit off, it sounds good to me. He is much better at communicating than any of us are, and I hope to speak half as well before the year is out.
Theresa is a midwife and helps Vicki with many of the births. She is very down to earth, and a supportive wife to Jason, as well as a full-time mom to her girls. It has been great getting to know the Eheler’s better.
