For those of you who were wondering about the clinic status, Mercy In
Action is currently renting out a building and running a clinic here in
Olongapo not far from the Mercyland property. They have a staff of
volunteer midwives and are actively practicing and working with the
Filipinos here. Mim is interning at the clinic, and so she spends her
days differently than the rest of our team. At the moment, Vicki, Ian,
Rose, and Theresa are heading up a midwifery workshop in the Subic Bay
area, and have about 10 women in attendance, Mim among them.
The meeting with the Mayor of Olongapo went well. He gave his support for Mercy In Action, and was in favor of the services that they are offering his city. We had quite a turnout, as a whole group of us came to City Hall decked out in matching MIA t-shirts, a great sea of white and blue. After the meeting, we gathered around the Mayor for pictures. The purpose of the meeting had been to secure good relations. To celebrate, we all went into Subic Bay and sat down to a delicious dinner of gourmet pizza. It was a real treat. I kid you not, the pizza was 2 feet in diameter, and every slice was satisfying. It was sad that Levi and John had to miss out on the scrumptious meal, as they were at St. Jude’s Hospital. Jake, however, was on cloud nine and enjoyed himself immensely. Our group took up an entire room, so we had a private area with air-con. And we ordered 7 pizzas, eating until we could eat no more.
After the meal, John and I slipped out to celebrate something on our own. We have been married for 8 months now, and he wanted to give me a special night out. We drove on the scooter together and then walked along the bay, admiring the scenic views. We finished the evening by stepping into a Starbucks. He spoiled me…but I did savor my coffee. We truly live a wonderful life.
